Spanish-English Dual Language Immersion Program (K–5)

Pathway to Bilingualism MedalLaunched in 2008, Aldama Elementary School’s Spanish-English Dual Language Immersion Program serves Kindergarten through 5th grades. It is the longest-established program of its kind in northeast Los Angeles.

Since its inception, teachers and staff have worked to refine and improve our program into a model for other schools to follow. The program was built around a team teaching structure to ideally provide two classrooms per grade, one dedicated to Spanish instruction and the other to English instruction. This team teaching approach ensures a fully immersive experience for each student with instruction, learning materials, and even art and visual aides around the classroom based in the language being taught.

LAUSD Ready for the Real WorldAs part of LAUSD’s Multilingual Multicultural Education Department (MMED), Aldama Elementary’s Dual Language Program provides a robust start to each student’s journey toward biliteracy in English and Spanish. Scientists who study the brain say that learning multiple languages at a young age provides many benefits, such as stronger cognitive abilities, deeper academic understanding, multicultural awareness, and heritage connections. MMED has designed its programs to prepare students for today’s interconnected world, fostering a deep understanding of language, culture, and knowledge in order to achieve future success.

As we at Aldama continue to boost our student enrollment following the COVID pandemic and keep developing our model program, we invite you to visit and see first-hand how our dedicated teachers and staff deliver on LAUSD’s vision of a multilingual, multicultural future.
